Urban Aboriginal Strategy Engagement 2016

Why

As part of its commitment to improve the Urban Aboriginal Strategy (UAS) in Budget 2016, the Government of Canada is seeking input on how the program can better meet the needs of urban Indigenous peoples. Funding for the current program was extended until March 2017 and the program will continue to operate while this engagement takes place.

What

The UAS provides project funding for programs that help connect Indigenous peoples in urban centres to services tailored to their particular needs.

This engagement consists of face-to-face regional roundtables in up to 21 urban centres with select stakeholders and partners, as well as an online survey open to all (now closed).

National Indigenous organizations and the National Association of Friendship Centres will also carry out their own parallel engagements and report on the views of their respective members.

As well, all members of parliament and senators have been invited to host town hall meetings in their own communities.

The information gathered through this engagement will inform the development of policy options for program renewal that better meet the needs of urban Indigenous peoples.

How to participate

There are five ways to participate:

  1. Attend a regional roundtable (limited to stakeholders and partners – by invitation only).
  2. Attend a town hall meeting organized by a member of Parliament or Senator (where available).
  3. Fill in the online survey (now closed).
  4. Send a letter to the address in contact information.
  5. Send an email to SAMU-UAS@aadnc-aandc.gc.ca
