How appointments work
Some of the organizations for which the minister has appointment responsibilities have been established under land claims and enabling legislation. Others have an advisory role to the minister. These organizations vary in scope.
Members of these organizations are appointed in one of 2 ways:
- a Governor in Council appointment is made by the Governor General on the advice of one of the ministers and the Queen's Privy Council of Canada
- a ministerial appointment is made directly by a minister through a letter of appointment

National Indigenous Economic Development Board
The National Indigenous Economic Development Board (NIEDB) is the only national, non-political organization of its kind, mandated to provide strategic policy advice and guidance to federal government on issues of Indigenous economic development.
Board members are appointed for various terms and may reside anywhere in Canada. The principal role of all NIEDB board members is to provide strategic policy and program advice to the federal government on all matters pertaining to Indigenous economic development.

First Nations Market Housing Fund
The First Nations Market Housing Fund is designed to facilitate access to financing for market-based housing purposes in First Nations communities. The fund helps to create the capacity in First Nations communities to support the administration of market-based housing programs.
The board oversees the fund's governance policies and practices and is responsible for guiding the direction of the fund to achieve its objectives.
