Investing in First Nations drinking water
Budgets 2016 to 2019 made significant investments toward improving access to safe drinking water.
Budget 2019
- Commited to invest an additional $739 million over 5 years for drinking water and wastewater, beginning in fiscal year 2019 to 2020, with $184.9 million per year ongoing
- This investment supports continuing efforts to eliminate and prevent long-term drinking water advisories
Budget 2018
- Invested an additional $172.6 million over 3 years, starting in 2018-2019, to improve access to clean and safe drinking water on reserve and accelerate the pace of construction and renovation of affected water systems
Budget 2017
- Invested an additional $4 billion over 10 years, starting in 2018-2019, to build and improve infrastructure, in First Nation and Inuit communities
Budget 2016
- Invested $1.8 billion over 5 years for on-reserve water and wastewater infrastructure to:
- address health and safety needs
- ensure proper facility operation and maintenance
- end long-term drinking water advisories on public systems on reserve
