Regulations Amending the Indian Oil and Gas Regulations
Enabling act(s)
Indian Oil and Gas Act
Description
Phase I of the Indian Oil and Gas Regulations, pursuant to the Indian Oil and Gas Act, was brought into force in 2019. Phase II of the regulations will continue the improvement of the oil and gas regime operating on First Nation lands. Indian Oil and Gas Canada, along with the Indian Resource Council's Joint Technical Committee, have been working on amendments to update the environment and surface provisions in the current Indian Oil and Gas Regulations.
Consultations with individual First Nations and industry are expected to begin at the end of the 2024 calendar year. Consultations are expected to be completed early in 2025, with the targeted coming into force of the regulations at the end of the 2025 calendar year.
Potential impacts on Canadians, including business
Impacts are expected on businesses operating oil and gas exploration and exploitation activities on First Nation land, as defined under the Indian Oil and Gas Act. Potential positive impacts are anticipated for First Nations who have oil and gas exploration and exploitation activities on their respective First Nation lands.
Regulatory cooperation efforts (domestic and international)
This initiative is not under a specific formal regulatory cooperation work plan.
Consultations
Consultations with First Nations and industry are expected once a consultation draft is ready.
