Tarquti Energy: A Sustainable Future for Nunavik
In Nunavik, an exciting initiative is underway: Tarquti Energy, the first regional Inuit-led renewable energy developer. Since its establishment in 2017, Tarquti Energy has focused on transforming the production and consumption of energy in Nunavik. The organization aims to ensure that proposed solutions address the needs of Inuit communities while also respecting the environment.
One of Tarquti's most significant projects is the construction of a wind turbine in Quaqtaq, which will begin shortly and provide electricity to the village. By harnessing wind power, Tarquti demonstrates its commitment to clean and accessible energy while raising awareness in communities about the importance of renewable energy. Joe Lance, General Manager of Tarquti Energy, emphasizes, "We want to prove that every small action counts when it comes to protecting our environment."
Tarquti is the result of a collaboration between two major organizations in Nunavik: the Fédération des coopératives du Nouveau-Québec and the Makivvik Corporation. Together, they aim to provide sustainable alternatives, such as turnkey solar power systems, enabling Nunavimmiut to generate their own electricity when they practice cultural activities like hunting and fishing. These initiatives not only reduce reliance on diesel generators and develops knowledge in renewable energy but also strengthen Inuit autonomy and pride.
To achieve this vision, the company has launched several ambitious projects with support from Quebec's Green Initiative, an initiative of Indigenous Services Canada and Canada Economic Development.
Tarquti's mission extends beyond electricity generation; the company is also committed to training local experts in renewable energy. This effort equips communities with essential skills, empowering them to take the lead in the energy transition. A great example is the Sillitik symposium, organized in 2023 in partnership with Pituvik Landholding Corporation. This first-ever event on the energy transition and renewable energies in Nunavik’s Arctic environment brought together community leaders, relevant regional organizations, experts, and government representatives to share knowledge and experiences. Future editions are already being planned, ensuring the continuation of this critical dialogue.
Tarquti Energy is not solely focused on powering homes; it's about building a greener, more sustainable future for Nunavik communities while fostering autonomy and resilience among Nunavimmiut. By embedding human and community values in every project, Tarquti embodies a vision of development that is environmentally respectful and deeply rooted in local culture. Despite facing challenges, the company's commitment brings renewed hope for a sustainable future based on collaboration and solidarity.
