About the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act

The Access to Information Act is one way that Canadian citizens, people who live in Canada, and corporations residing in Canada can access federal government records that are not of a personal nature.

The Privacy Act is one way that Canadian citizens or other people present in Canada can access federal government records that contain their personal information.

When to submit an ATIP request

You can submit a request for:

Consult Get help researching your First Nations ancestry to request a family search history under the Indian Act or a letter of ancestry to attest you have registered ancestors.

Submit an ATIP request

You can submit an Access to Information request online through the ATIP Online Request Portal or by contacting the department directly. A notice of acknowledgement will be sent to you upon receipt of your request.

Make sure to include a completed Access to Information Request Form (Form TBC/CTC 350-57) or Privacy Request Form (Form TBC/CTC 350-58).
