This award is created in memory of John K. Macdonald by his wife April and their four daughters. It is to be awarded to an Indigenous student who is enrolled in the Faculty of Education at The University of Winnipeg, who shows keen interest in using their education to benefit their community and position themselves as a positive role model for others. Recipients must also demonstrate financial need. This award has the potential to be renewed for up to four additional years, depending on available funding. To renew, students must be enrolled in a minimum of 18 credit hours and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.50. John was a loving husband and father who was empathetic to and frustrated by the barriers Indigenous communities face. Acknowledged as a mentor to many, this award honours John's life by alleviating a student's financial strains and positively influencing their future, in the hope that their success may have a positive ripple effect on future generations. A self-made man, John never forgot his humble beginnings and his belief that education is the key to making change happen.
